║ GETTING STARTED WITH TERMINOLOGY ║
╚══════════════════════════════════╝
√√√ SOME TERMS YOU MUST KNOW
√√√ ROWS (Run Horizontal)
Spreadsheets are basically a grid-like paper with rows and
columns. Rows run from the left side to the right side of the paper
.
√√√ COLUMNS (Run Vertical)
Columns are vertical spaces that run from the top of the
Worksheet to the bottom of the Worksheet.
√√√ CELLS
Wherever a row and column intersect, the box that is formed
is called a Cell. Cells are used to hold information or data,
like Employee or $35.56.
√√√ MAIN MENU
The Main Menu contains the commands that processes information
that will be entered on the worksheet.
√√√ Worksheet
Worksheet is where you do all your calculations and entries.
It has rows and columns for holding the data that you enter. Where
a row and column meet it forms a cell (box). It is in this box
called a cell that you enter your data.
√√√ THE FORWARD SLASH (/) COMMAND
The Forward slash, which is located left of the Shift key,
is used to retrieve the command panel. The Command Panel
displays a list of the Lotus commands at the top of your screen.
√√√ ARROW KEYS
There are four arrow keys that move the blinking cursor.
There is one key for up, one for going down the page
and one each for going to the right and to the left of
the page (worksheet).
With most entries you will use the right or down arrow for
locating the cursor.
√√√ THE HOME KEY
The Home Key will return you to the first row and
first column (A1) of your worksheet. If your data goes off the
screen press the Home key to return you to Home base (A1).
√√√ HOME KEYS AND END KEYS
The End key moves the blinking cursor to end of page.
Pressing the Home key moves the cursor back to the last cell entry.
√√√ END KEY AND THE FOUR ARROW KEYS
The End key and the four Arrow keys will get you to any
of the four ends of the worksheet, if there are no entries,
in that row or column. The cursor will stop at the first entry
in that row or column.
- 2 -
The following exercise assumes there are no entries on the
worksheet.
▀ If you press the End key it will be highlighted on the right
bottom of screen.
▀ Now press the right arrow and release. The cursor will go
the last column. (IV column 256)
▀ The End key and the left arrow will take you back home
To A1, same as the Home key.
▀ The End key and the down arrow will take you to the last
row 8,192.
▀ The End key and the Up arrow will take you back to A1,
same as the Home key.
√√√ THE ESC KEY
The Escape key acts like an eraser. It erases any data
that is not entered. It also backs your worksheet to
the previous sheet to the Ready mode .
√√√ THE GOTO KEY <F5>
This express key will zoom you to any cell you want.
First press the <F5> Function key.
Then enter a location such as, column F and row 8 (F8).
Then press the Enter key and the cursor will zip to cell F8.
This makes it unnecessary to use the arrow keys and work
your way one cell at a time.
√√√ THE SHIFT, ALT, CONTROL KEYS
To use any key on the keyboard you strike and release the key.
There are three exceptions to this rule. The Shift, Alt,
and Ctrl are used with other keys:
For example, <Shift+F5>. To make the <Shift+F5> key you
must press and hold down the <Shift> key then press
the <F5> Function key. Then release both keys.
This procedure is the same for all three special keys.
*** END OF CHAPTER ***
Press the Esc key to return to the Menu.
Select the "Ready Mode" and press the <Enter> key.
